This past year, I billed out about 853 hours of work. At a rate of $50 an hour (which I think is what our "rates" work out to, even though it's all funny money in the end) that's $42,650. No, that's not what I actually get paid, it's just supposed to defray some of the cost of my salary and, er, living expenses I guess you could say - office, phone, yadda yadda.

It's kind of depressing to think that it takes me a year to cost the Canadian taxpayer what I cost in one night of a live fire exercise.

PS: plz 2 be payin ur taxes, I needz the moolah. kthx.

I found out yesterday that those fancy dan IP phones cost about $150 for the hardware and $500 for the license. Pretty sure those are one-time license fees, but it pays to buy $vendor.

I get IP phones named after me? With the proper capitalization? Wow.

When you're paying taxes, are you really just paying yourself?

Nope, I like to think of MY tax dollars as going to all the causes that I don't like. That way I have something to get angry about!

Hi kraig. I have a question about the uwaterloo community.

The user emperorbokassa and I got caught up in a number of heated discussions. The posts began to fill with more and more personal attacks until someone else stepped in and disabled replies. Emperorbokassa then started a new topic in uwaterloo to continue making personal attacks against me. He even posted parts of a letter I sent to someone on another website without my permission.

While one could argue that I attacked him by calling him a troll, emperorbokassa's behaviour has been far more aggressive and disruptive to the community. While I offered to agree to disagree and move on, emperorbokassa started a new target to continue his [whatever you want to call it].

You're listed as the maintainer of the community, and I cannot go to ljabuse because he has not used my real name or address. I feel that the community has been disrupted enough by all this, and I invite your intervention.

Emperorbokassa has editted his post and I think he has crossed several lines in doing so.

http://community.livejournal.com/uwaterloo/515664.html

It is my opinion that he is accusing me of the things he is guilty of. But whether you think he's right, or if you think I'm right, or if you think we're both wrong, posts such as his have no place there.

I would like action to be taken. Think of me what you may, but I am convinced that Emperorbokassa is a troll account and his style of posting hurts the community.

What, exactly, is it that you would like me to do?

I'm not exactly sure what the correct thing to do is. His posts were full of personal attacks before, but starting a thread dedicated to attacking me is a knowing escalation on his part. I wouldn't object to his thread being deleted.

I don't feel I can ask for previous threads to be cleaned up because of the time commitment involved, but it's something I would consider if I was moderator. I think it's important to protect the image and culture of the community and to set a precedent for troublemakers.

Things run very smoothly at the uwaterloo community 98% of the time, but once in a while we have a situation like this where strict moderation would help keep things under control. Ultimately, it's your community. The most I can do is bring your attention to what I perceive to be a problem. After that, it's your prerogative how to react.

Arguing with anonymous strangers on the Internet is a sucker's game
because they almost always turn out to be - or to be indistinguishable
from - self-righteous sixteen-year-olds possessing infinite amounts of
free time. - Neal Stephenson, _Cryptonomicon_

IOW, my advice would be to simply not engage with trolls.

It was made quite clear to me some time ago that the community is not particularly interested in moderation of any kind, strict or not, so I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request (to paraphrase somebody or or other). I'm not generally in favour of deleting posts anyway, regardless of content, given the nature of the meat-community surrounding the LJ-comm.

Personal attacks aren't cool, but usually the best way to deal with them is to ignore them, and eventually the person will get tired and go away.

The fact remains that this post exists. Two thirds of it is dedicated to harassing me.

Before, he was being inflamatory and insulting. The post I linked to is a clear escallation of that and I see no reason to let it remain.

Letting people engage in long juvenile discussions is one thing, and if the community wants to allow it then so be it. However, this behaviour is on a different level. Intervening would be acting in good faith with the community.
